Language workshops

Language exchange and workshops in Toulouse

One hour of real conversation, in groups small enough that you actually get to speak. The sessions are free, and so is joining AEGEE Toulouse.

In short

AEGEE Toulouse runs free Language Workshops in Toulouse every Monday from 19:00 to 20:00: one hour of guided conversation in small groups of six, on a new theme each week. Sessions run in French and English, sometimes Spanish or Italian, and you pick your level when you register.

The format

Six around a table

Five people and one fluent moderator, around a table rather than in front of a whiteboard. Six is small enough that nobody gets to hide, and big enough that the conversation never dries up. It is also why seats run out.

You learn a language the way you learn one abroad: by using it badly, in front of people who do not mind.

The theme changes every week, recently from food and history to well-being, sport and business. No fixed syllabus, and that is deliberate.

The practical details

Same evening every week, on a campus that alternates, in two languages most weeks and three levels running side by side.

One week in two

  • TBS Education
  • YNOV

Which campus a given week falls on is always shown on the ticketing page. Check there before you set off.

Most weeks

  • French
  • English

Sometimes

  • Spanish
  • Italian

Levels

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

You choose your level when you register, and that choice is what decides which group you join. Nobody is tested, and nobody is corrected in front of the group.

How do you take part?

Two steps, in this order: you cannot book a seat before you are a member.

  1. Ask to join

Send AEGEE Toulouse a direct message on Instagram. No fee and no restriction: Erasmus or not, student or not, anyone who shares what the association stands for is welcome.

  2. Book your seat

Once you are a member, pick your session on the ticketing page. Groups are small, so seats go quickly: booking early is the difference between this week and next.

Want to help run the workshops?

Groups of six cap how many people can take part, and demand regularly outruns the seats. More moderators means more groups, and more groups means fewer people turned away. If you speak a language fluently and can keep five people talking for an hour, AEGEE Toulouse is looking for you.

Common questions

  • Are the Language Workshops free?

Yes. The sessions cost nothing, and joining AEGEE Toulouse costs nothing either.

  • Do you need to speak French to take part?

No. Sessions run in several languages and you choose your own level. AEGEE Toulouse is a multilingual association and most of what it organises happens in English.

  • Do you need to be an Erasmus or exchange student?

No. There is no restriction at all: anyone who shares what the association stands for can join and take part.

  • What level do you need?

Beginner, intermediate or advanced. You pick when you register, and that choice is what decides which group you end up in.

  • Where does the workshop take place each week?

On the TBS Education campus one week and the YNOV campus the next. The campus for a given week is always shown on the ticketing page.

  • How can you help run the workshops?

By volunteering, as a moderator in particular. The small-group format is what limits the number of seats, so every extra volunteer opens another group.
